COAL MINISTRY

Click here to sign the fax message to the Coal Minister
Right now, Greenpeace activists dressed as tiger mascots are standing outside Coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal’s office. They are there to deliver petitions signed by more than 20,000 people like you who want our forests kept intact.
The Coal Ministry’s greed for more coal is threatening forests in Central India. These forests are home to large numbers of tigers and other threatened wildlife. A lot of people also depend on these forests for their livelihood. Coal mining will destroy both wildlife and forest communities.
We need to show the minister that the activists standing outside his office are not alone. They are supported by people who want their forests to be safe. We are sending a fax to the minister to give him this message. Lots of signatures on this message will show the strength of public support for the activists outside the minister’s office.
Watch Greenpeace activists deliver the message of over 20,000 forest supporters to minister Jaiswal and then add your signature to this fax message.
http://www.greenpeace.in/junglistan/save/fax-mr-jaiswal.php
There is enough coal in existing coal mines, combined with renewable energy and efficient use of energy, to provide sufficient electricity for us. There is no need to destroy more forests. This is exactly what the Minister of Coal is being told right now.
Coal mining is already destroying tiger habitats in Chandrapur,[1] Maharashtra and is responsible for displacing thousands of people in Singrauli.[2] In spite of all this the Coal ministry still wants more forests for coal.
Tigers, biodiversity and the millions who depend on forests need you. Tell Minister Jaiswal to spare the forests!

Troy Davis struggle now shifts to Reggie Clemons

Last year, you made an amazing impact when you participated in Write for Rights. Six of last year's cases have now been released or seen their conditions improve!

This year's Write for Rights begins in less than a week. Can we count on you and your letters again this year?

Sign up now, and help us reach our goal of 250,000 letters of solidarity and hope.

Thank You,

Michael O’Reilly
Senior Director, Individuals at Risk Campaign

Write for Rights begins this Saturday. Will you write a letter to save a life?

Dear Supporter,

Black man. White murder victims. No physical evidence. Sentenced to death despite massive doubts. Sound familiar?

This is Reggie Clemons. Like Troy Davis before him, Reggie has been in prison for 20 years, waiting for his home state to end his life.

From the investigation to the trial to the appeals process, issues of unfairness plague Reggie's case. Two young women tragically lost their lives, but we cannot be sure that Reggie was responsible for their deaths. He has been sentenced to death for a crime he may not have committed.

Amnesty is fighting for clemency for Reggie, just as we did for Troy, and today our movement is swelling.

Rally for Reggie during Amnesty International's Write for Rights Global Write-a-thon. Don't wait - this event begins on Saturday, Dec. 3, less than a week from now.

Yes, I'll pledge to write a letter for Reggie and for other urgent cases! Sign me up - and count my letters toward your 250,000 letter goal.

During Write for Rights we're shining a light on 15 priority cases, including Reggie's. Each one of these cases represents an individual or group suffering human rights abuses. Several are at imminent risk of death or terrible mistreatment.

Reggie himself faces a hearing early next year that could mean the difference between life and death. Your letters may help push Missouri authorities to make the right decision to spare Reggie's life.

Our Write for Rights campaign has saved lives before by generating floods of letters that governments can't ignore.

We cannot be silent when injustice is all around us. Reggie and other Write for Rights cases - from Shin Sook-ja and other women, men, and children held in North Korea's notorious Yodok political prison camp, to the residents facing imminent eviction from their homes in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to China's imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo - need you to raise your voice.

Pledge to write letters of hope on your own, or host an event at your home, church, school, library or community center. More letters mean more impact, and every single letter counts.

Will you write a letter to save a life? Sign up now to Write for Rights!

In solidarity,

Michael O'Reilly
Senior Director, Individuals at Risk Campaign

  Pledged yet?

This monk needs you

Change.org
Secretary Clinton: Call for the release of 1,600 political prisoners during your historic Dec. 1 visit
Sign the Petition
With your help, Thursday, December 1 could be the greatest opportunity in a generation to bring about genuine democracy and human rights in Burma.
On that day, Hillary Clinton will become the first American Secretary of State to visit Burma in 50 years -- a move meant to reward Burma’s military regime (which craves international recognition) for recent elections but also assess how much has actually changed.
But the military and pro-democracy forces inside Burma both know that change can’t happen when 1,600 of the country's most promising leaders, including Buddhist monks, are held as political prisoners. It’s a living nightmare -- political prisoners are held in dog cages and experience torture, beatings, and even years of solitary confinement without a single day outside their cells.
U Pyinya Zawta is a Buddhist monk from Burma who knows exactly how hard these conditions are to survive -- he was imprisoned for 10 years for his political activities. Now, as a refugee and Buddhist leader in New York, he has started a petition on Change.org to push Secretary Clinton to get real results from her visit. Sign Buddhist monk and former political prisoner U Pyinya Zawta’s petition asking Secretary Clinton to call for the unconditional release of 1,600 political prisoners and an end to attacks against ethnic minorities during her historic visit to Burma this Thursday.
Burma's military leaders have responded to international pressure before, releasing key political prisoners. If Secretary Clinton pushes for the release of all political prisoners and other key measures for a more genuine democracy, the Burmese government will really listen.
And to her credit, Secretary Clinton has been open to calls to action by the public: Just this summer, over 22,000 people signed a petition on Change.org that resulted in Secretary Clinton calling for the right for women to drive in Saudi Arabia -- which she then did during an official visit.
As the first visit from an American Secretary of State to Burma in over 50 years, December 1 will be the biggest opportunity in many of our lifetimes to create sweeping change in Burma. Please sign U Pyinya Zawta's petition asking Secretary Clinton to call for the release of all political prisoners in Burma during her historic visit next week, and then send it to everyone you know:
Thanks for being a change-maker,
- Weldon and the Change.org team

P.S. Thousands of people are changing the world through petitions on Change.org every week. Here are some that need your support now:

Rs 1,752,000 collected as bribe by the Judiciary: Bribe report analysis

14,802 reports and a whopping Rs 386,150,381 collected as bribe! Between October 31 and November 19, 2011 a total of 237 bribes have been reported across the country. While 85 bribes were reported against the police department, the number of bribes collected by the judiciary and the registration department stood at 6 and 21 respectively. The other reports are spread across the customs, Indian railways, passport, water supply, municipal services, income tax, excise and other departments. However, what is intriguing is the ratio of the bribe amount to the number of bribes collected. The amount collected by the judiciary accounts for Rs 1,752,000 in comparison to Rs 2, 56,010 collected by the police. These reports highlight the dynamics of bribe count to the bribe amount. Read our bribe reports to explore the other emerging bribe patterns.

Benched for being a girl

Change.org
Tell North Carolina schools: Let girls like Mina Johnson play football.
Sign the Petition

Mina Johnson is the first girl to play football for Southampton Academy in Virginia -- and she's a starter who racked up four sacks in a single game earlier this year.
But despite her talent, Mina was forced to sit out two games this football season because of a backwards rule: She wasn't allowed to play because she's a girl.
Football teams from two rival schools threatened to forfeit their games against Southampton's Raiders if Mina played. Both teams are part of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association, a conference that doesn't allow girls to play on boy's teams -- even if no equivalent team exists for girls.
While boys still outnumber girls in high school sports, Title IX has helped level the playing field dramatically over the past 40 years. Researchers studying the regulation's impact have shown that girls who participate in sports are more active, do better in school, and go to college in higher numbers than girls who don't play sports. It's hard to imagine any school or conference would want to roll back that progress.
If enough people join Adrienne's campaign protesting the unfair treatment Mina received, the conference will have to change its policy -- allowing Mina to play against its teams next year, and making sports more accessible for girls across North Carolina.
According to her coach, Mina is "an example for the team of how to hustle and work hard." It's time for the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association to support female student athletes like Mina, and let them play. Sign Adrienne's petition to keep the pressure on the conference:
Thanks for being a change-maker,
- Shelby and the Change.org team

JUNGLISTAN

Click here to become a citizen of Junglistan
Are you a citizen of Junglistan? India’s forests need your support. Coal mining is threatening the existence of our forests in Central India.
Tiger habitats in Chandrapur Maharashtra [1] and communities living in Singrauli [2] are already bearing the brunt of coal mining. Yet the coal and power ministries are bent on acquiring more and more forests to mine coal. There is no need to destroy more forests. There is enough coal in the existing mines, together with renewable energy and energy efficiency to meet our electricity needs.[3]
If coal mining is not checked in time, tigers, our biodiversity, and the livelihood of millions who depend on the forests will be gone forever. Over 18,000 people have already become citizens of the virtual land of Junglistan, to show their support for forests. More people will help strengthen this movement to protect our forests.
You should become a citizen of Junglistan because forests are valuable and need to be saved from coal mining.
http://www.greenpeace.in/junglistan/save/become-a-citizen.php
Junglistan symbolises the support behind the forests. We need to tell the government that millions of people in India want their forests to remain intact.
The very thought of losing our forests and all that they stand for is very sad. Forests will only be left in stories like the Jungle Book.
Let’s save our beautiful forests from becoming barren, ugly coal mines. Become a citizen of Junglistan now!
